| "Here it smells well!" |
|
Many follow the sound of the riveting hammer, and at least 2000 –3000 summer guests enjoy the smell of wood shaving and wood tar. Many remember its childhood, boat care and spring tendency. Others had a father or a grandfather the boat farmer were and to experience again the opinion of again-planed boat planks in the middle in a large heap splinter. For again different the smells are strange and new, but it is nevertheless so, as if the senses recognize something age-old, something exciting however simultaneous calming down. It is already strange with old boats. They carry many memories in itself unbelievably. Not only from at home and of humans, who do not live no more, but also the smell of sea-seaweed and tar, seewind and seawater. Memories of fishing, if the fish bite, the joy to rudders, if the boat dances easily over the waves....
Wood boats have a soul, say some. That is possible. I consider sometimes, whether one arrives later with plastic boats, around it to repair ”because the boat of the grandmother heard”. For a while I was employed with the north land museum as craftsmen, supervision man and leaders for the old person commercial place Kjerringøy. The work was versatile. Gabaeude, boats and thousands of articles should be maintained and retained for the future. The commercial place should be presentiert in an alive and historically correct way for a constantly growing public. After 12 years I saw that the work was so extensive that it only few. Opportunity gave to deepen me into my large passion i.e. boats builds. A vital decision was seized! Today I am established as boat farmer and independent entrepreneurs. My boat workshop has two departments. In ”the Zahlfjøsen” I rent a restaurant for the building of small north land boats and other rowing boats. Besides I have a traditional boat workshop established to the building of north land boats over 6m. In this workshop I can build also small blockhouses, a handicraft, which has much with the boat building in common.
